Notes on Tor Project funding — The Pentagon

From 2011 through 2013, the Pentagon funded Tor to the tune of $2.2 million, through a U.S. Department of Defense / Navy contract — passed through a defense contractor called SRI International.

(The grant is called: “Basic and Applied Research and Development in Areas Relating to the Navy Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance.”)

PS: This note is meant to go along with my coverage of "Internet freedom" programs that are funded by military and intelligence arms of the U.S. government: Internet privacy, funded by spooks: A brief history of the BBG"

PPS: Notes on Tor funding coming via the US government's Broadcasting Board of Governors can be found here, while Tor's State Department funding can be found here.
